Dudes. It’s me, Adrian. How’s by you? I’ve been getting back into writing new stuff over the last couple weeks and now I’m getting ready to hit the road again with The Fugitives, we’re heading out to do the Winnipeg Fringe Festival with a few stops on the way. (www.fugitives.ca)

My apologies for the delay on my new record- the good news is we have a fantastic mixer on board (Howard Bilerman, who did Arcade Fire’s record, Funeral, among others). The bad news is he isn’t available for a while so the record still has a bit to go before it gets released. But i’ll be making some new videos (non-porn) this summer and putting out a couple new songs in the fall (also non-porn), so stay tuned. Like a guitar, not a radio. Stay in tune. It’s better.

Other than that some new artists I’ve been listening to a lot are Joe Pug and Circlesquare- check em out. And i found an incredible painter named Andrew Salgado who will be supplying some of the artwork for the new record- check him out here (www.andrewsalgado.com).

That’s me for now. I’m going to put on some long underwear to get me through this Vancouver summer.

Love and… love,

Adrian’s other project, roots ensemble “The Fugitives”, have big news! Our brand-new full-length album hits the world today!

Buy the physical copy here from 604 records:

It’s called Eccentrically We Love, and we are so so so excited about it. We recorded it this past December, right after our seven-week Canadian tour. We came home, locked ourselves in North Vancouver’s Neighbourhood studios, and spent a month of recording. After 1,536 hours in each other’s company (yes, we were counting), we decided that we still like each other! Even better news is that we realized our different musical backgrounds actually bring us together and make stuff better! More than any of our previous work, this album is the result of co-writing, co-editing and co-performance. Collaboration! Yeah!

As you might have guessed from the album title, all the songs are about love and affection, in one way or another. But never fear! We haven’t gone sappy. Eccentrically We Love chronicles the beautiful itchiness of being close. It’s about getting irritated, angered and distraught, and the exhilarating necessity of feeling this way.

We were very lucky to work with some amazing people on this. Leo-Award winning producer\composer Matthew Rogers co-produced, Veda Hille guided and inspired, Jesse Zubot slayed on violin and Rod Murray did delicious things with his trombone.

We are stoked to hear what you think about it all. The album’s available through 604 records, on i-tunes, and at live shows. Drop us a line through this site, or come talk to us when we’re near. Chances are we’re coming to you soon. Show dates are up on our calendar. Send yourself! Send your friends! As always, we will be disastrously enthused to see you.

Hearts and Exclamation Points!!!

Let the new record commence! Day three now. Yesterday we were in the warehouse-like space of Ogre Studios laying down some percussion. We had the lads of the Fringe Percussion Ensemble bring in all their toys into a dimly lit room and hit things, stomp and clap for a few hours. At one point I was conducting and had Martin playing a suitcase with his foot while clanging a bread-dish and mixing bowl together, Danny was hitting clay pots with a drum-stick, Brian had a small stack of metal sheets he was shaking while Jonathan just repeatedly dropped a bucket full of stuff on the ground. I felt like a mad-hatter conductor cueing these things. At one point we just recorded them all making ambient noise with whatever they could put their hands on in there and it was a cacophonous clatter, some real beautiful noise. This is a great way to start a record, it bodes well.

I hit the road with The Fugitives (www.fugitives.ca) next month, all the way to Charlottetown and back. We’re selling the brand new Eccentrically We Love record on which we also hit some things, though not as many things. But there is baritone guitar and Zubot’s violin playing. It is a very good record, methinks.

That’s it for now, back to work editing this madness together.

Just watched “Crazy Heart”. Somehow, I’m not as moved as I thought I would be. Sort of a Disney version of The Wrestler. Golden grit. A story with shallow valleys and modest peaks. And it’s hard not to be cynical- another story of an alcoholic but this one with every shining opportunity in life blown. No, I don’t feel sorry that he’s out on the road playing bowling alleys night after night- that’s just the road. A million others would kill for the shot he had. And I don’t even get much of a chance to feel bad for him anyway because before long a connected friend has a record company offering him a $95, 000 advance. This is not the luck of the average addict. On any given day I could walk a few blocks and find someone else who needs several drinks just to function normally, just to converse or work or walk around. But put a guitar in the loser’s hands and you have a bit of romance, you have a bit of good old-fashioned country hard luck. But most hard luck stories don’t end with a jaunt in rehab, a fat royalty cheque backstage and a sunset. This is just Hollywood alcoholism. Golden grit. Another crack at scratching the surface of the tough life courtesy of the shining American stars with just enough toilet bowl hugging to make it all seem real. It doesn’t really cut it when you think about it. It may be a wonderful performance and a subtle and believable portrayal of an alcoholic. But it doesn’t really cut it. It’s all still just an escape. A cliche. I’d rather be moved. There’s enough cliches in the goddamn country songs anyway.

Shows!~

-Adrian’s crazy-excited to be opening for CR Avery in Victoria, Courtenay, Kelowna and Sun Peaks in early February (see below for details!).

- There’s an all-ages Fugitives show coming up soon- January 24th at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre. Tickets are limited and are available here: http://www.thecultch.com/content/view/251/353/

- Huge thanks once again to the artists, organizers and everyone who came out to the Down to Earth benefit show in late December. We raised $1500 for “Down to Earth”- a grassroots group that brings sports, arts and education programs to children and youth in one of Mumbai’s poorest neighbourhoods. Their site: www.downtoearthindia.wordpress.com

See you in 2010 (and with a new record! Well, soon..).
