New Video! “Best Things”
Voila— “Best Things”, the video. Directed/Edited by that beast of talent, Marlene Ginader. She took random iPhone footage I shot of myself at 1am in the backyard with a flashlight and she made it into art.
This song tracks my grandparents after they left a refugee camp in Austria and voyaged from Europe to Montreal (not New York, as intended), with a toddler in tow. My Dido (grandfather) was a trained tailor and some Jewish men on the ship wrote a letter for him in French and instructed him to head down to the Jewish quarter once they arrived in Montreal, that they were always seeking tailors and could give him work. The lyrics in this song also reference a scar on my grandfather’s hand– a bullet wound that he had self-inflicted to avoid serving with the Nazis in Ukraine.
The recording features a percussion bed of found objects-- copper kettle, forks, keys, a knife on a water-glass and more.
Recorded at Monarch Studios by Tom Dobrzanski with Sally Zori on drums and Catherine Hiltz on bass.
